The Women’s Wrestling Project

Mission: to establish Pennsylvania and the surrounding states (NY, NJ, DE, MD, OH) as the world wide ‘center of excellence’ for women’s wrestling.
Rationale: Women’s wrestling is now well established as an Olympic sport, and continues to grow at all levels. New collegiate programs are added each year, providing opportunities for young women to continue their education through wrestling. As an Olympic sport, it is important in each country’s total medal count. (The goal of each governing body, in each country, is to win medals in their sport). Pennsylvania is the strongest wrestling state in the nation – it has a well-established tradition, great coaching pool,strong  competitive system, and a developmental infrastructure - including  knowledgeable administrators and media. When we consider the size of Pennsylvania, both geographically and in terms of population, we see that we are similar to many countries around the world that produce a disproportionate number of international medal winners. With a deliberate, focused effort, Pennsylvania should be among the best in the world. When we include the surrounding states, we are clearly in position to rise to the top with enough planning and effort. Now is the time to make this effort, as women’s wrestling is well established, but still young enough to provide an open door. As members of the wrestling family in Pennsylvania and the northeast, we cannot sit by and let other, less developed areas be the leaders in any area of wrestling. Our pride in our coaches, athletes, parents should move us to act.

 In addition, the inclusion of over 50% of the population in our sport will provide growth in participation, opportunity, and recognition, as well as financial growth. There are also numerous benefits regarding the implementation of Title IX.

 Finally, the most important reason is that girls and women want to wrestle. If we believe that wrestling has enhanced the lives of our fathers,sons, and brothers, how could we not provide the same experience for our sisters, wives, and daughters?

• Develop the USA Wrestling club system for girls and women.  
• Establish a women’s coaching education program that enhances the USA Wrestling certification system.
•  Establish a technical development program based a common syllabus that is coordinated with the USA Wrestling national women’s coaching staff.
•  Establish age-appropriate annual and multiple-year training plans to guide the athletes development as they progress.
• Have 1,000  girls in a freestyle developmental program in PA,OH,NY, NJ, and 500 in both MD and VA in 3 years (5,000 athletes total in 6 states).
• Offer a girl's sanctioned public high school state tournament in PA, OH, NY, NJ, and MD within 3 years.
• Establish a fully funded scholarship program at Lock Haven University, with the scholarship awarded to students who desire to become professional coaches and certified teachers.
• Establish Women's Wrestling in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference within 3 years.
• Once scholarships are funded at LHU, funds will be raised for scholarships for female wrestlers/students at other PSAC and other PA colleges, and in surrounding states.

THE PURPOSE OF THE WOMEN'S WRESTLING PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH PENNSYLVANIA AND THE SURROUNDING AREAS AS THE WORLD'S CENTER OF WOMEN'S WRESTLING EXCELLENCE. THIS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED BY EARNING THE MOST INTERNATIONAL HONORS OF ANY REGION IN THE WORLD.

JOIN THE LADY EAGLES WRESTLING CLUB AT LOCK HAVEN UNIVERSITY - OPEN TO ANY FEMALE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THROUGH COLLEGE AGE. ADULT WOMEN INTERESTED IN COACHING ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN.
